Make a fight cost food without short fights being free
In a survival game a fight should leave you hungrier, but short scuffles keep costing nothing and long ones cost a lot. Here is how to keep the bill fair for every fight length, and what should happen when the food is already gone.
Why this works
A small cost does not become zero just because you can only pay in whole pieces. Remembering the unpaid part and adding it to the next bill makes the total the same however the time is sliced, and turning missing food into harm keeps an empty stomach from being a loophole.
When not to use it
Skip it when food is meant to be a story detail rather than a pressure, or in a game with a short run where hunger would never matter. Then use a simple meal at fixed points, or leave hunger out and keep fights about health.
