Spielerando

Tell players honestly how many tries a rare drop may take

A drop that comes once in a hundred kills does not arrive after a hundred kills for everyone. Some wait three times as long. Knowing the real spread lets you promise sensible things in the game and understand why players complain. This entry computes it exactly.

Why this works

People hear a small chance and read it as meaning soon. The real chance of having the item by the expected point is far lower, and the unlucky tail is long. Naming how many tries cover most players sets honest hopes and shows where a guarantee is needed.

When not to use it

Skip it when the chance changes with luck, a guarantee or the player's level, because one fixed figure would be wrong. Work it out for each case. Also avoid it for drops from a shared pool, where one player's tries change the next player's.
