Show a health bar that drops at once and a pale chip that drains later
Players read a hit best when the bar falls straight away and a lighter stripe shows how much was just lost, then fades out. Here is how to time that stripe so rapid hits and healing in between never make it jump or cheat.
Why this works
The eye needs a moment to take in a change. Showing the true value at once but leaving a pale trace of what was lost, then letting it fade, lets the player see how big the hit was without making the bar feel slow.
When not to use it
Skip it when many small hits land every moment, such as damage over time, since the trace never gets to drain and just looks stuck. Show a plain bar and a number that ticks instead.
