The host's game crashed and the guests' progress from tonight is gone
In a game one friend hosts, the host's computer is the only place the world is written. When it dies before saving, everyone loses the evening. Here is how a guest's own copy can bring a character back, and when it must be ignored.
Why this works
When two copies disagree, the one that is further along is usually the one to keep, and only a counter that one authority hands out can say which that is. Clocks on different computers never agree, so time stamps cannot be trusted to order events.
When not to use it
Wrong for a competitive game or one with real-money items, where a guest might edit their copy to cheat. Then the host should keep the only truth, and guests should get back only what the host can check for itself.
