Spielerando

How much of a session is spent at each game speed, and how much is spent paused?

Players who push the speed to the maximum may be eager, or they may be bored and waiting for something to happen. Counting the speed button presses tells you nothing; time at each speed does. This entry shows how to measure it and keep pauses out of play time.

Why this works

How people use time controls shows how they feel about the pace. Pausing is thinking, not playing, so it must be counted apart. Running at top speed is often a way of skipping boredom. Splitting paused time from the speeds used shows both planning and waiting.

When not to use it

Do not use it for games without speed controls or a pause, or where pausing is forced by menus and pop-ups. The shares would measure the interface, not the player. Fix the forced pauses first, or log the reason for each one.
