Spielerando

Did the hint really help players, or would they have done it anyway?

After you add a hint that nudges players toward an action, more of them do it, and it feels like a win. But some had already done it, and others would have done it on their own. This entry shows how to measure the real lift against a fair comparison group.

Why this works

Seeing a hint and then doing the thing says little, because the people who see it are often the ones about to do it anyway. A fair test compares like with like: people the hint reached against people it did not, measured from the same kind of moment.

When not to use it

Do not use it when you cannot hold anyone back, for instance when the hint is needed for safety or everyone must see it. Then compare before and after carefully, or ask players. Skip it too when too few people reach the moment.
