Track a quest item through pickup, death and extraction without losing it for good
The mission is to carry a case to the exit. The player dies on the way, the case falls on the floor, and then the player dies again or leaves it behind and it is gone. Or the exit and the death happen in the same moment. Here is how to keep every outcome clear.
Why this works
A quest item must always be somewhere the story can find it. Giving it exactly one place at a time, and letting a dropped item return after a while, means a death can cost the player effort but can never close the quest for good.
When not to use it
Skip the return when losing the item should hurt for good, as in a hardcore game where mistakes stay. Also skip it when several players carry the item, since where it goes back to then needs its own rule.
