Build a "hold this point" meter that handles contested and abandoned points
A zone fills while the player stands in it, but what happens when an enemy steps in too, when the player leaves for a second, or when three friends arrive? Without clear rules the bar jitters, jumps back to nothing or fills in a blink. Here are rules that feel right.
Why this works
A meter should answer each situation a person can see: only one side present, both present, nobody present. A pause while contested, a slow loss when empty and a lock once full make the point feel fair and make leaving cost something small.
When not to use it
Skip it for a point that is taken in one instant, like touching a flag, or in a game with no opponents. Also avoid the lock when the point should be fought over again and again until the round ends.
