Spielerando

Does a power-up really help, or do only the good players manage to get it?

Players holding a power-up survive more often, but that may only show who they are. This entry shows how to compare each player with themselves, so you see what the item changes and not who picks it up.

Why this works

Skilled players find the item more often and also survive more often, so pooled results flatter it. Comparing each person against themselves with and without the item removes the skill difference and leaves the item's own effect.

When not to use it

Does not work when most players always or never have the item, since nobody can be compared with themselves. Hand it out at random to part of the players for a short test instead.
