Add a dodge roll that protects only in the middle of the roll
A dodge that protects for its whole length is too strong, and one that protects for none of it feels cheated. Add a cost and a pause so rolling is a decision, not a habit. This entry shows which part of the roll should be safe and when you may roll again.
Why this works
A dodge becomes a decision when it protects only part of the time and costs something. Immunity in the middle rewards timing, exposed edges punish a panicked press, and a limited supply of energy stops it from becoming a habit.
When not to use it
Do not give a dodge to games where movement and blocking are the defence, or where attacks are too fast for any timing to help. A roll there is clumsy. Offer a sidestep or a shield instead.
