Make a cursed ring that sticks until the player earns its release
A cursed item is a promise to the player that they will regret trusting it. It has to stay on through every normal way of taking it off, yet still be removable by the story, and it must not trap a save. This entry shows each way out and how to close the others.
Why this works
A curse only means something if every way of getting rid of the item is closed, so the question is asked in one place that all of them go through. A curse without a way out is a trap, so there is always a price the player can pay, and the story may also lift it.
When not to use it
Do not use a lasting curse in a game aimed at young or easily frustrated players, or where the equipment choice is the main fun. A trap that cannot be undone feels unfair there. Use a short, visible penalty instead.
