Spielerando

Let the player script a companion's behaviour in a few simple rules

Companions that do something silly on their own are annoying, and ones that wait for orders are tiring. A short list of if-then rules, read top to bottom, lets the player shape them. The hard part is what happens when the first matching rule cannot be carried out.

Why this works

People trust a helper they can predict. A short list read from the top, where a rule that cannot be carried out is passed over and the reason is shown, lets the player see why the companion did what it did and fix it.

When not to use it

Wrong when you want companions to feel like people with minds of their own, or for a very simple game where there is nothing to script. Let them act on their own character, and give the player a few direct orders instead.
