Build a charge shot with levels, a quick tap and a fizzle when held too long
A weapon you hold to charge seems simple until a quick tap wastes a half-charged shot, the meter freezes at full forever, or the level shown differs from the level fired. Here is the timing that makes the shown level and the fired level always agree.
Why this works
One number does all the work: the time the button has been held. The meter and the fired level are both read from that same number, so they cannot disagree. Make every other thing the player sees a reading of one shared truth, and mismatches disappear.
When not to use it
Skip it when the weapon should be quick and predictable, such as a rapid-fire gun or a game played on a touch screen where holding a finger down is tiring. Use a plain tap shot, or a cooldown, instead.
