Keep a hit combo alive with a timer that gets stricter as it grows

A combo counter that always gives the same time to land the next hit is too easy at ten hits and too harsh at two, and it keeps ticking while the screen freezes on an impact. Here is a combo clock that starts generous, tightens fairly and pauses when it should.

Why this works

A chain of hits stays exciting only if it asks more of the player as it grows. Each new hit sets a fresh, shorter window rather than adding to what is left, so skill is needed to keep it alive, and the payout happens once when it ends.

When not to use it

Don't use it in a relaxed game, or one where the player can't control how fast hits land, such as an idle game or a slow tactical fight. A shrinking window feels unfair there. Use a fixed, forgiving window, or none at all.
