Spielerando

Griefing is noticed days later and every backup is already overwritten

Keeping only the last few backups protects against a crash but not against the thing people notice a week too late. Here is a thinning rule that keeps many recent copies and a few old ones, with a count that stays small however long the server runs.

Why this works

Trouble is noticed late, and the older a loss is, the less exact a rescue needs to be. So keep many fresh copies and few old ones: you want the last hour precisely, but last month only roughly. Always keeping the newest leaves you something.

When not to use it

Do not rely on it for tiny changes that matter, such as one purchase or a single trade. A thinned backup cannot restore those. Keep a log of events for that, and use backups only for big damage to the world.
