The autosave kicks in during a boss fight and the save can never be won
Saving by timer is simple, but it will sooner or later save at the worst possible moment, such as when the player is nearly dead. Here is a set of rules for when the game may save by itself, and when it must wait.
Why this works
A save is a promise that the player can continue from here. Saving in the middle of a fight or fall breaks that promise, so the question is not how long it has been but whether this is a place worth coming back to.
When not to use it
Skip the automatic version when the player should decide, such as in a game of hard choices where one save slot is part of the tension. Let them save by hand, and warn them when it has been long.
