Things vanish or turn into nothing when the game is saved and loaded again
Some kinds of data quietly change or disappear when turned into a save file, so the game after loading is not the game you saved. Here is the list of the usual culprits and a way to carry them through unharmed.
Why this works
The storage format only knows plain text, numbers and lists, and it drops the rest without a word. Marking each special value on the way out and undoing the mark on the way in makes the game read back exactly what it wrote.
When not to use it
Skip the markers if you can keep the game's data plain from the start: lists instead of sets, text instead of dates. Simple data needs no translation, and the save stays readable and easy to repair by hand.
