Save a generated world as small changes and survive a patch
Saving every tile of a huge world makes the save file enormous, and saving only the player's edits breaks the moment you improve the world generator. Here is a way to store just the changes, drop the ones that undo themselves, and spot edits a patch has made stale.
Why this works
A save should hold only what the player did, and remember what the world looked like when they did it. With that memory you can tell their change from the world's own, so a better world builder later never erases a house.
When not to use it
Skip it for a small world that fits comfortably in the save, or one that is hand-made and never rebuilt. Then just store every tile; the saving of space is not worth the extra care.
