Let players undo a move without letting them reroll a missed shot

Undo is a kindness in a thinking game, until someone discovers they can miss, undo, and try again until the dice are kind. Here is how to keep undo for moves but make a repeated attack give the same result, and when to close the door for good.

Why this works

Luck is only fair if it is decided before the player can take it back. Keeping the dice inside the saved game means undo brings back not just the position but the next roll too, so the same shot gives the same result and nothing special has to forbid rerolling.

When not to use it

Wrong for games with hidden information, where undoing a reveal lets the player look for free, so cut the history there. It is also too generous for games that want hard consequences, such as roguelikes, where every choice should stay.
