Subtitles overlap, vanish too quickly, or end before they begin
A timeline of spoken lines needs more than a start and an end for each. Lines that run into each other on the same speaker line, ones that show for a blink, and ones with the times swapped all happen when many are written fast. This entry lists them by number.
Why this works
A caption is read, and reading takes time. So the screen time and the length of the words belong together, and each caption has to be judged on its own and next to the one before it in the same place.
When not to use it
Do not stretch captions for fast, tense or comic moments where being quick is the effect, and do not trust one speed for every player. For long or dense lines, split them instead of adding time, or offer a slower reading mode.
