Stop players from dropping or selling an item the story still needs

In a story game one thrown-away letter or sold amulet can leave the player stuck with no way forward and no idea why. This entry shows how to protect such things in every place they could leave the bag, and when to let go of the protection again.

Why this works

A rule kept in many places will be forgotten in one of them. Putting the question in a single spot that every way out of the bag must ask means a new button cannot open a loophole. Releasing the item after its part is played keeps the bag from filling with useless things.

When not to use it

Do not lock items in a game that is meant to let the player lose things and live with it, where a lost key opens a different path. Then allow the loss and write the story so that it can go on another way.
