Spielerando

Change what an item says as the player learns more about it

A photograph in your pocket should read differently before and after you recognise the person in it. This entry lets one item carry several descriptions, picks the right one without a tangle of conditions, and lets looking at it teach the player something once.

Why this works

What a thing means depends on what you know about it, so the same object should read differently as the story unfolds. Picking the line that asks for the most known facts rewards progress, and the order in the file stops mattering, so new clues add lines without touching old ones.

When not to use it

Skip it for items whose meaning should stay a surprise until one big reveal. A description that changes a little each time may give the twist away early. Hold such an item's text fixed and reveal it in a scene.
