Spielerando

Turn a hero name into a save file name that works on every computer

Players type names with slashes, dots, accents and emoji, and a save named after the hero then fails on one system while working on another. This entry shows how to build a safe file name, keep two heroes with the same name apart, and not cut a name in half.

Why this works

Whatever a player types ends up on a disk that has its own strict rules, and the strictest computer sets the bar. Keeping the shown name as typed and deriving a separate safe file name lets people use any name while no two heroes ever land in one file.

When not to use it

Skip it when saves never become files named by the player, such as one fixed slot or numbered slots 1 to 3. Then name the file by its slot and keep the hero name only inside it, so there is nothing to clean.
