Hundreds of story flags make the save file long and slow to read

A long adventure remembers who you met, which doors you opened and what you chose. Written out one by one, this fills the save. Here is a compact way to store all of it, and the one rule that keeps old saves from reading the wrong answers after an update.

Why this works

A yes-or-no fact needs only a single mark, not a name written out each time. If the names live in one list that only grows, a position in it can stand for the name forever. The whole trick holds only as long as the list never moves its entries.

When not to use it

Do not pack when the file is small anyway, or when people read and fix saves by hand: a plain list of names is clear and forgiving. It also cannot hold more than yes or no, so use plain numbers for counts and levels.

  • What to build, step by step

  • 3 common mistakes and the fix
  • 28 lines of example code with 3 checks that pass
  • How your AI shows you that it works
