How many deaths does it take before a player switches to the easier setting?

The moment players lower the difficulty tells you where the game pushed them too far. This entry shows how to count the deaths that led to the change, and why only the earliest change should count.

Why this works

A switch is a reaction to a recent run of failure, so only the deaths shortly before it count. The earliest switch is the first time the game was too hard; later ones are experiments, and old deaths belong to other moments.

When not to use it

Not for games without a difficulty setting, or where it is chosen once at the start by taste: deaths and the switch are unrelated then. Look at where players quit after deaths, or ask them.
