Let a stuck player skip a riddle after wrong tries, for less and with a way back

A riddle nobody can solve ends the story for that player, yet a free skip makes every riddle pointless. Here is a middle road: the way out opens after a number of different wrong tries, pays less, and can be made good later by solving it after all.

Why this works

Effort shows in different guesses, not in pressed buttons, so the way out should open on the former. Making the skip cost something keeps the riddle worth solving, and a way back keeps a bad day from taking the satisfaction away for good.

When not to use it

Skip it when the riddle blocks the only way forward in a story the player cares about and no payout is at stake. There offer a hint or a free skip, because being stuck is worse than a cheaper win. Also skip it for competitive puzzles.
