Estimate how hard a word puzzle answer is before any player has seen it
When you add new answers to a word game you want a rough order of difficulty on day one. This entry shows a simple score from the letters of the answer and, more importantly, how to check it against what players do so you can fix it.
Why this works
Uncommon letters are harder to guess and doubled letters are easy to overlook, so even before anyone plays, the letters of an answer say something about its difficulty. This rough guess orders new words well enough, until real play replaces it.
When not to use it
Do not trust it for words everyone knows or nobody does, since familiarity matters more than letters. It also fails in other languages unless you use their own letter order. Once players have solved a word, take their real guesses over the score.
