Turn a playtest log with thousands of error lines into a short list of causes
After a play session the log shows the same complaint hundreds of times, each with another monster number or room name, and nobody can see how many different problems there really are. This entry shows how to group lines that differ only in their details and rank the groups.
Why this works
A long list of complaints is mostly the same few problems wearing different details. Once the parts that change from line to line are replaced by fixed marks, equal problems look equal, and counting them shows which cause deserves attention first.
When not to use it
Grouping by look can hide a rare line that matters more than a loud one, and it cannot judge how serious a problem is. When the log is short, or one odd line is the whole story, read it directly.
