Time a parry so a perfect block pays off and mashing the button does not

A parry that works whenever the button is down is just a shield, and one with a window of a single frame is cruel. Here is a window with two grades, a cost for missing, and the order in which things must be checked so the hit and the button never race.

Why this works

A skill move is only worth learning if wild guessing costs something. A short reward window for good timing, plus a pause after a miss, turns the button from a shield you can hammer into a decision made by reading the enemy.

When not to use it

Skip it in games for relaxed or very young players, or where attacks are fast and hard to see. Use a simple block that costs energy, or an automatic dodge, so nobody is punished for missing a tiny window.
