Platforms and timers are out of step between players

Every computer has its own idea of what time it is, and a moving platform or a countdown that depends on the clock will look different for each player. Asking the host for its time works only if you pick the right answer from several. Here is which one, and how to adopt it without the world lurching.

Why this works

A question and its answer travel the same road, but only a quick answer proves the road was clear both ways. The fastest reply leaves the least room for an unnoticed delay on one side, so it is the one worth trusting.

When not to use it

You do not need it when nothing depends on the exact moment, for example turn-based games or timers that only the host shows. Send the host's remaining time with each message and let screens simply display it.
