Keep chests and bags working when an update renames or removes an item
A survival world is played over weeks, and the game will change underneath it. An old save that holds an item the game no longer knows can crash on loading or silently lose it. Renames must be followed, removals must be paid back fairly, and anything unknown has to be kept for later.
Why this works
A saved game is a promise that what you owned stays yours across changes. Mapping old names to new ones, paying out for what is gone, and parking the unknown under a label that remembers it means no update can silently erase someone's hours.
When not to use it
Skip it in a game that restarts each time, such as a short session game with no saving, or while you are still prototyping and nobody keeps a file. Simply start fresh; build the carry-over once players have something to lose.
