Sanity drains in the dark, but a friend at your side should not cancel it
A horror game wants the dark to wear the player down, yet every helper, candle or comforting item makes the fear meter stand still. Here is how to let help slow the loss without ever switching it off, and where safe rooms fit in.
Why this works
Fear that comforts can cancel stops being fear. Letting help only shrink the loss, never beyond a share of it, keeps the dark a real threat while still rewarding company. Dim light costs less than full dark, so players are not punished for every shadow.
When not to use it
Do not use it in a game that is meant to be gentle or cosy, where losing the mind to the dark is not part of the story. There, make darkness a matter of seeing less rather than of being worn down.
