The same scare should frighten less every time, while a new one still hits hard

If every jump scare adds the same fear, the fifth door slam is as strong as the first and the bar fills in seconds. Here is how fear can wear off per kind of scare, come back after rest and still reach its ceiling.

Why this works

People get used to what they have already met, so the same trick works less each time while something new still startles. Counting each kind of scare separately, and letting rest bring freshness back, makes the author vary the dread instead of repeating it.

When not to use it

Leave it out when repetition is the effect, as in a ritual, a countdown or a loop the player is meant to dread more each time. There, let fear grow with repeats instead of fading.
