Spielerando

Do players fail more when the action happens where the thumb cannot reach?

On a phone held in one hand, some parts of the screen are awkward, and a level that asks for precision there is harder than its design suggests. This entry shows how to split the screen into regions and tell a real hotspot from noise.

Why this works

The thumb reaches some parts of the screen easily and others only with a stretch, so losses piling up in one region point at the hand, not at the puzzle. Comparing each region with the overall average lets a real pattern stand out from ordinary swing.

When not to use it

Skip it on tablets held in two hands, on games controlled by tilting or by buttons outside the screen, or with very little data. Then the touch position says little about reach, so test with several people holding the device as they naturally would.
