Fill a new match-three board without lines that clear by themselves

A fresh board that already contains three in a row pops before the player has done anything, and filling it again until it behaves is slow and unpredictable. This entry shows a way to fill it once, cell by cell, that never creates a line, and the case where it cannot work.

Why this works

A new piece can only finish a run with pieces that already exist, and filling in reading order means those are only to the left and above. So forbidding those few colours before each choice is enough, with no repair afterwards.

When not to use it

This keeps the board free of lines, not interesting. If you want a start with a ready move, or a layout made by hand for a level, fill it as you like and only check it afterwards for stray runs and for a first move.

In the full entry

  • What to build, step by step
  • Starting values and the reason for each
  • 3 common mistakes and the fix
  • A diagram of every state
  • 29 lines of example code with 4 checks that pass
  • How your AI shows you that it works

Say this to your AI

Use the Spielerando entry "Fill a new match-three board without lines that clear by themselves" (read_entry match-board-start-without-lines) in my game. Build it step by step, and show me how you checked that it works.

Or skip this and connect the MCP: your AI then finds all of this by itself.Connect the MCP
