Which tiles may be picked in a stacked tile-pairs game, including half-offset ones
A tile may be taken only when nothing lies on it and it can slide out sideways, but tiles sit on half-steps, so a neighbour can block from a corner and a tile above can cover only part of another. This entry shows how to decide cleanly and how to accept a pair.
Why this works
A tile is free when it can be slid out: nothing above it, and at least one side open. Measuring positions in half steps makes partial cover and offset neighbours count, which tiles lined up in exact rows would never show.
When not to use it
Do not trust "free" alone for a layout you made by hand: a board can have free tiles and still be unwinnable. If winning must be guaranteed, build the layout by removing pairs backwards from empty, not by dealing tiles.
