Make the loading bar rise smoothly even when file sizes are not known yet
A loading bar that jumps to nearly full and then slides back because another big file turned up looks like a bug. This entry shows how to estimate the unknown part, never move backwards, and only reach the end when the game really is ready.
Why this works
A bar is a promise about the future, and players forgive a slow bar but not a lying one. Estimating the unknown part from what you already know, never letting the shown value fall, and saving the last step for real readiness keeps the promise honest.
When not to use it
Skip it when loading is so short that a bar only flashes, or when you really cannot estimate anything. Then show a spinner or a line of text, which promises less. A fake bar that crawls on its own is worse than none.
