Spielerando

How many hits can a player really take when attacks hit for different amounts?

Dividing health by the average hit gives a wrong answer as soon as a fight mixes light and heavy blows. This entry shows how to work out the real expected number of hits, so your health and damage numbers match the feeling you want.

Why this works

When hits differ in size, the last one often wastes damage, so a big hit near the end is worth less than its size. Working through every health level in turn gives the true expected count instead of the rough shortcut.

When not to use it

Needless when all hits are equal or when health regenerates between hits. Then simple division is fine, or you should test how long fights last in practice with real players.
