Spielerando

Work out how many scrolls it takes to enchant gear to a high level

Each enchant attempt can succeed, fail harmlessly early on, or drop the item a level later on. Designers set the chances and then discover that the cost of the top level is ten times what they guessed. This entry computes the real average cost step by step and checks it with a simulation.

Why this works

Each step up the ladder carries the cost of falling back, so the price of the top is far more than the steps added together. Working it out from the bottom shows the true average cost before any player pays it.

When not to use it

Don't use a gamble ladder when the item is a story gift or when players hate losing progress. Failing and dropping back feels like a punishment to them. Let upgrades always succeed for a fixed price, and spread the effort over time.
