Grow a plant while the player is away and let it wilt if it runs dry

In a garden game the plants should be further along when the player comes back after hours or days. But a plant only grows while the soil holds water, and it should not die before the player had a fair chance to return. Here is a calculation that gives the same answer however often the app is opened.

Why this works

A plant does not need to be watched to grow. If you know how much water was left and how fast it dries, you can work out the whole absence at once, and the result is the same however the gap is cut into pieces.

When not to use it

Not when other things in the garden affect the plant during the gap, such as pests, weather or a neighbour that shades it. Then the days are no longer alike, so step through them one by one, or per day.
