Check that a town in your world can feed itself through the winter
A mountain city of five thousand with three small fields sounds grand until someone asks what they eat in winter. Here is a season-by-season count of harvest, storage and hunger that finds the first season a settlement starves and how many fields it would need.
Why this works
A town survives on its worst season, not its average year. Counting food season by season, with spoilage, shows the thin months that a yearly total hides. Reality is the easiest check on a world: people have to eat, and readers feel it when they cannot.
When not to use it
Skip it when food is magic, shipped in or beside the point, as in a sky city fed by a spell. Also skip it for a place that is clearly starving, where hunger is the story and exact numbers add nothing.
