Make a boss swing hurt only while it is truly swinging
Players learn to read a wind-up and dodge at the right instant. That only works if the damaging moment is exact: not at the start, not forever, and not skipped when the game has a slow frame. This entry shows how to test the danger zone fairly.
Why this works
A warning is a promise. If the picture says the danger is over, nothing may hurt, and if it says now, the check must follow the player's place at that moment, however long the frame took. Honest timing is what makes a hard boss feel fair.
When not to use it
Skip it for attacks that should be unavoidable or that linger, such as a burning floor or a poison cloud. Those hurt for as long as you stand there, so check the zone every moment instead of in a short window.
