Give all abilities a short shared wait, with some that ignore it
Without a shared pause between abilities, players chain every strong move at once. With one, quick reactions like a block or a potion feel stuck behind it. This entry shows how to split abilities into two kinds, and how speed bonuses shorten the pause without ruining it.
Why this works
A short shared pause sets the rhythm of play, while reactions must answer at once or they feel broken. Letting haste shorten only the shared pause rewards speed without making every button instant, and a refused press should cost nothing.
When not to use it
Skip it in games where players should chain abilities freely, such as combo fighters, or where a slow, deliberate pace is the point. A shared wait there only feels like input lag; give each ability its own cost.
