How long did the player really play when the game was left open and idle?
In slow strategy games people leave a window open while they cook dinner. Session length then claims hours of play that never happened, and every quit statistic built on it is off. This entry shows how to count only the time that was really played.
Why this works
Time on the clock is not time spent playing. A person who left the game open and walked away adds nothing to what they enjoyed. Counting only the stretches between real actions, and skipping long silences, gets close to the time someone was actually there.
When not to use it
Do not use it for games where long watching is part of play, such as ones with slow timers, spectating or idle progress. Skipping those stretches would cut real engagement. Pick a longer cut-off or count what the screen showed instead.
