Warn before the player leaves a place where an item can still be missed for good
Story games with a point of no return make collectors anxious. A fair game tells them when something still lies behind, but does not blame them for things they could not have reached yet. This entry splits what is at risk from what is simply out of reach and warns once.
Why this works
A warning is only fair when the player could act on it. Telling people about what they can fetch right now keeps trust, while staying quiet about what they cannot yet reach avoids blame for things they had no way to know, and warning once stops the dialogue becoming noise.
When not to use it
Skip it in a game built around consequences and one pass, where missing things is part of the story. Also skip it when everything can be collected on a later visit; a warning would only cause needless worry.
