Spielerando

Show a torn diary as readable pieces with honest gaps where pages are missing

When a story is spread over pages the player finds in any order, reading what they have should already make sense, and the gaps should be marked without saying what is in them. This entry assembles the text from the pages held, joins neighbouring gaps and notices when it is whole.

Why this works

A reader can follow a story with holes if the holes are shown honestly. Building the text from whichever pages are held, in page order, means finding order never matters, and one marker per missing stretch keeps the gaps readable and the mystery intact.

When not to use it

Skip it when the order of discovery is itself the story, such as letters that must be read in the sequence they were found. Also skip it when pages are separate scenes that make sense alone; a plain list of documents is enough.
