Show a torn-up old letter with gaps for the pages still missing
The player finds the bottom of a letter first, then the top, then a scrap in the middle, and the text should read right at every stage. Here is how to join the found parts, mark each gap once, and tell when the whole thing can be read.
Why this works
People read what is there and wonder about what is not. Showing the full text once, with the found parts lit and every missing stretch as a single gap, gives the same picture in any order of finding, and shows how much is left without giving the length away.
When not to use it
Skip it when the text is meant to be read in its own order or each find is a whole note by itself, like a series of diary entries. Then show each one as a complete page and do not pretend they are pieces of one letter.
