A stone plate that opens a gate only under enough weight and closes a moment after
A plate in the floor should react to a heavy crate or a few animals, not to a feather, and the gate should not slam shut the moment the weight steps off. Here is how the plate measures what stands on it and how long the gate stays up.
Why this works
A real plate carries load and a gate has some weight to move, so neither reacts instantly. A short grace time after the load leaves hides flicker when a crate slides or a foot slips off, and it gives the player time to pass through.
When not to use it
Wrong for a trap or a puzzle in which the gate must close the instant the weight leaves, such as a timing challenge. There, remove the grace time and make the response immediate, so players can learn and rely on it.
