Arrows at the screen edge that point to an attack outside the picture

A battle on the other side of a large map goes unnoticed unless something at the edge of the screen points the way. Placing an arrow at the right spot on the border, also in the corners, is a small geometry problem that most first tries get slightly wrong. Here is the calculation.

Why this works

An arrow should point at the event, not just along the border. Drawing a straight line from the middle of the screen to the event and stopping where it meets the edge gives the true direction, even in a corner, where clamping each side alone would bend it.

When not to use it

Too many arrows turn into noise, for instance in a big battle where events surround the screen. Then group them, show only the most urgent, or use a colour or a sound for the kind of danger instead of one arrow per event.
