Centering on my army shows empty ground because of one unit left far behind
The average position of a group is dragged away by a single unit that wandered off, so the view centers on nothing while the army stands elsewhere. Here is a way to find the middle of the main body instead, how many units to set aside, and what to do for tiny groups.
Why this works
The middle of a crowd should say where most of it is, and a single far-off member says little about that. Dropping the extremes on both sides before averaging keeps the answer steady, and it still equals the plain average for a tight group.
When not to use it
Wrong when the lone unit is exactly what matters, such as a hero or a unit under attack. Then centre on that one, or fit the view around everyone so nobody is left off screen.
